Campbell River is known as the salmon capital of the world. It’s a lovely area for fishing in the inland waters of the Campbell River’s Discovery Passage and Johnstone Strait. This area between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver Island contains all of the major species of Pacific salmon, along with Chinook, prawns and many more varieties. Fishing is stable throughout the year, in areas that experience very favorable and comfortable conditions. As you explore the area on one of our charters, keep your eyes open for different species of sea birds, marine animals, bears (both black and grizzly) and the endangered killer whale.

MAY THROUGH JUNE
When it’s late spring / early summer on the Campbell River in British Columbia, you’ll find loads of herring, needle fish and different varieties of salmon in the water. These fish are essentially coming to the area to look for food. When you’re approaching the end of June into the more solid summer months, ling cod and halibut are present. Our boats head out to the areas where the big fish are located.
JULY THROUGH SEPTEMBER
All five species of Pacific salmon migrate down the Johnstone Straight into the Campbell River during the months of July through September. This is also when we see the most killer whale and turtle sightings. This is peak season for us, so book your date early. Not to mention, it’s a gorgeous time of year to take in all of the surrounding scenery and mountains.
LATE SEPTEMBER THROUGH OCTOBER
All of our locals like to come by at some point from late September to October. This is when chum salmon are at their peak before they head upstream. It’s not uncommon to catch 10 to 25 pound varieties on one of our outings. Temperatures during this time period can be unseasonably warm, making it a perfect time to go fishing. Our boats are stable in all weather conditions throughout the year.
NOVEMBER THROUGH OCTOBER
Through the winter and spring months, there’s a bit less activity in the waters of the Campbell river, but you can still catch large numbers of Chinook salmon while you’re out. It’s also a good time of year to fish for halibut and prawns. If you’ve never been Campbell River prawning before, this is an exciting adventure.
